
Job description
To aid the Structures Design Team Leader in ensuring that the Structures Team have adequate training and resources.
To aid the Structures Design Team Leader manage external resources used by the Structures Team.
To agree the briefs, programmes and budgets with the Structures Design Team Leader and Senior Structures Engineer.
To prepare designs, reports, specifications and other deliverables for structures schemes.
To allocate tasks to other members of the Structures Team and monitor progress
To monitor the designs produced to ensure they meet the design briefs set by the Delivery Teams.
To ensure designs are appropriate and meet the expected levels of technical excellence.
To seek innovation in the delivery of schemes and techniques used to design and construct them.
To ensure the quality system is actively applied to all highways schemes.
To facilitate the Performance Measurement
Manager and Business Improvement Manager in achieving targets and business improvement.
Candidate specification
Membership or working towards membership of an appropriate professional institution (ICE or IStructE)
Registered with or working towards registration with the Engineering Council
Have undertaken Training Review or other intermediate step to attaining an appropriate professional qualification
5 days of CPD in last 12 months including 3 related to Structural Engineering
Basic Project Management Skills. Competent in Structural Engineering
Broad skills, knowledge and understanding of other design areas
Understanding of H&S Requirements related to Structural Engineering
Broad knowledge of CDM and other H&S legislation
Competent in exercising the Designer's obligations of CDM
CSCS Supervisor (Gold) Card
Understanding of Environmental Requirements of structures schemes
Basic knowledge of Quality Management
In-depth understanding of QMS. Good communication skills
Relevant vocational qualifications (MEng / BEng / BSc / HNC and HND)
Detailed knowledge of design codes (DMRB / MCDHW etc) relevant to Structural Engineering
Knowledge of the HA procedures necessary to deliver a structures project
Knowledge of the use of computer design tools

Strong communications skills to be able to unambiguously communicate targets, and priorities.
Ability to develop relationships and engender trust at all levels of the organisation and with Clients.
Ability to co-ordinate all phases of the schemes process;
Ability to travel to Area 4 meetings and works sites and from time to time to attend meetings or training outside Area 4.
