What Salary will I be paid as a civil engineer?
Apart from the opportunity to work in an exciting and fulfilling profession being a civil engineer is a well paid career.
The salary you take home will depend on your experience, qualifications and where you are based:
- According to the 2013 Institution of Civil Engineers Salary Survey, the mean basic income of Members was nearly £50,000.
- For civil engineers who are not members the mean base salary is £30,450.
- For civil engineers based in London this rises to £30,896
- For those starting out in the profession, salaries tend to start at £23,500, rising to £26,500 with two years’ experience.
- There is a clear value to being chartered. Chartered engineers earn 30% more on average than Incorporated Engineers. If you are looking to get further training then consider choosing an employer who runs a training scheme. See the list here.
- Salaries vary from country to country. Civil engineers in New Zealand have an average base salary of approximately £35,000.
On top of your base salary your employer will usually provide other in work benefits such as a paying for any training and professional development, a pension, company car, life insurance, healthcare scheme.
