The Great Grid Upgrade

Published on: 15 Nov 2024

Overhauling transmission and distribution infrastructure to meet growing demand, regulatory changes, ambitious carbon reduction targets and new technological advances is challenging.

The UK needs to build 5x more electricity transmission infrastructure in the next 7 years than was constructed over the past 30. With the net-zero transition expected to result in a 50% increase in demand for electricity by 2035 and the complexity of transporting energy from scattered renewables to meet demand, the scale and pace of the upgrade is daunting.

A Novel Response

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, is approaching the challenge with a unique approach to recruitment.  The 31,000 strong firm enlisted the help of some of its own T&D team to star in an amusing film introducing their collaborative team culture and varied work.

Recruiting for senior civil engineers and other roles across the UK, the film touches on the firm’s experience on projects including HVDC, interconnectors, windfarms, substations, OHL, geotechnical solutions, building design, refurbishment works and more.

Stantec’s transmission and distribution director, Sophie Lee, told ICE Recruit the firm has exciting growth plans and lots of development opportunities. “We’re rapidly building a team that has all the technical skills to deliver ambitious projects, but that’s also really enjoyable and interesting to be part of.

“We want to recruit people who are excited to work with clients and other stakeholders across the sector to deliver the energy transition, and hope this helps showcase the whole team and opportunities to join us”.

With a global team boasting more than 75 years of experience around the world and provision of over 100,000 MW of planned or installed capacity, joining the organisation offers candidates a chance to learn from an established business and make a real impact.
