Work Development Team Engineers
The Canal & River Trust is a charity entrusted to care for 2,000 miles of waterways in England and Wales. We are responsible for an enormous network of bridges, locks, embankments, towpaths, aqueducts, docks and reservoirs. We care about looking after our heritage and improving and preserving it for future generations. Come and use your skills and knowledge to support an organisation making a difference. Deliver an important service, raise the profile of the Trust, and enrich people’s lives through our living waterways.
About the role
As one of the engineers in our Midlands Work Development Team, you will help deliver safe engineering solutions that conserve and enhance the heritage and environment of the waterways while supporting our aims of improving safety and increasing the number of people using the inland waterways network.
You will mostly be involved in feasibility and design tasks with some investigations and supervision of a wide range of civil engineering works. Day to day, this could mean representing the team at meetings, collecting and collating site information, preparing designs for permanent and temporary works, preparing drawings, writing works specifications or managing consultants. Other responsibilities include undertaking inspections, assessments and surveys, and providing engineering support to internal teams, contractors and consultants.
The role involves frequent travel to sites across the waterways of the Midlands, and occasional travel to other sites and offices across the national network.
A degree in civil engineering is essential for this role. Ideally, you will be someone with proven post-graduate design experience, although we are open to people with other levels of ability and experience. You must also be an experienced user of AutoCad, and willing to work towards chartered membership of the ICE if you don’t have it already.
The role will often involve you being apart from the rest of your team, so it is important that you are self-motivated and happy working on your own to meet deadlines.
We aim to represent the diverse communities we are part of and welcome applicants from across all sectors of the community. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce brings with it a diversity of ideas, thinking and ways of working which enhances what we do.
