The role

We are looking for five experienced engineers to join our Asset Performance Team and help protect communities across the South West from the devastating effects of flooding.

The South West faces a diverse set of challenges, including groundwater in Dorset, highly reactive catchment areas in Bristol and coastal areas in Somerset. Working at the Environment Agency is the opportunity to help solve these challenges and make a meaningful difference to people’s lives. As a Technical Advisor, you’ll bring engineering expertise to a multi-faceted team defending people and property across your designated area. You will manage a broad portfolio of river and coastal structures through every stage of the defence system; developing new structures, overseeing maintenance and inspections and prioritising improvements that maximise assets’ lifespans. Every day is different. Environmental incidents can strike at any time and a key part of this role is managing these as they occur; making sure that our defences perform when needed, maximising the Environment Agency’s impact in communities.

We have five roles based in Bridgwater and Blandford Forum across three different area teams (Somerset, Bristol and Avon and Wessex).

About you

A strong understanding of engineering principles is essential and the role is ideal for an I. Eng or aspiring C. Eng with extended experience. Exceptional communication skills are essential, as you will continually collaborate with a range of internal teams and the communities we help protect; you will be able to influence senior leaders and collaborate with diverse communities, even in difficult situations. The role demands a strategic thinker. You will identify future threats and develop strategies, budgets and delivery plans which optimise our resources to protect as many homes as possible.

You will be adept at supporting colleagues effectively, be prepared to lead when appropriate and use your initiative to improve the overall team performance.  Self-motivated and proactive in identifying opportunities, you will intervene to improve assets and maximise our delivery capability in the short and long-term. We are interested in candidates from a range of sectors but asset management, particularly in river systems, would be an advantage.

About us

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment. With around 7,000km of flood defences on rivers and 22,000 flood defence structures, some as big as the Thames Barrier, maintaining our flood defences is an essential part of what we do and the Asset Performance Team is central to fulfilling this role.
