Highways England is currently recruiting for a Principal Geotechnical Advisor/Team Leader on a permanent basis with the flexibility to be based in any of our National offices. This is a great opportunity to apply your geotechnical expertise with Highways England, where you’ll be engaged in the development and implementation of policies, standards, operating procedures and best practices, and the provision of associated technical advice and guidance in line with technical innovations and industry best practice. You’ll play a key role; to support the development, renewal and maintenance of Highways England geotechnical assets, ensuring compliance with relevant statutory requirements and external standards, the safety of Highways England staff, contractor staff and the public and delivering best value solutions.
Day to Day
- Contribute to the leadership and management of the wider Group, taking responsibility for the development and delivery of activities in line with the business plan and supporting the Group Manager and Divisional Director in setting overall strategy and direction.
- Manage the technical consultancy and research portfolio for the main geotechnics team within the Innovation Programme - ensuring best value, alignment to Highways England objectives and the effective management of consultants and budgets.
- Lead the development and continual review of policy (in specific areas of the geotechnical team’s work), ensuring the effective communication of changes and developments within the team and to affected stakeholders.
- Lead the continual review of relevant standards i.e. within the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges (DMRB), MCHW, BSI etc.
- Ensure that published technical standards, specifications, guidance and relevant processes are communicated effectively to stakeholders, partners and the supply chain, to support implementation and to ensure the availability of audit evidence.
- Ensure that the group remains at the forefront of best practice in the UK and beyond, which includes awareness of future challenges and direction of travel (for example, the impact that climate change will have on geotechnical asset performance). This will involve as necessary attendance at industry meetings, workshops and seminars, liaison with research programmes, and horizon scanning activities.
- Manage the technical refresh of GDMS/DDMS services to deliver and maintain high quality information, in accordance with Asset Information Principals and aligned to the strategic aims of Highways England and HMG Cabinet Office.
- Drive improvements in safety performance and lead by example whilst following the Highways England health, safety and welfare management system.
- You will be qualified to CEng or CGeol level and eligible for inclusion, or already included on the Institution of Civil Engineers Register of Ground Engineering Professionals (ROGEP) at Adviser level.
- Deep specific specialist knowledge, including;
- Geotechnical design experience on major infrastructure projects.
- Understanding of highway design standards & and practical application.
- Understanding of geotechnical risk and the management of geotechnical assets.
- Understanding of the principles of asset management.
- The application of GIS and databases for linear infrastructure management.
- Practitioner skills in a recognised project management methodology.
- Experience of working with a range of suppliers and stakeholders in the delivery of project objectives and in developing effective working relationships.
- Strong networking and communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and present results.
