Surrey County Council is the Highway Authority for the County of Surrey. It is responsible for the maintenance of a wide ranging infrastructure that includes 1,200 structures from heritage to modern bridges, and 4 River Thames crossings. As well as surface water drainage systems and safety barrier systems in 4800km of highway.

We spend around £7 million per year on maintaining and improving drainage, highway structures and safety barrier systems. To help manage this key area of work, we are looking for an enthusiastic person to support a small engineering team of 5 engineers responsible for delivering the annual programme of Infrastructure Schemes.

There is always a need to find innovative and new ways to improve our programmes of work and this is an ideal opportunity for an experienced self-motivated technician to make an important contribution to improve service delivery.

The team are co-located with the Kier who are our County Term Maintenance contractor. The role is a mix of office and site work, therefore a full driving licence and car are essential.

You will support the day-to-day duties of engineers with all aspects of contract management such as design, development and implementation of works programmes, investigation, estimating, works ordering, budget control, contract governance and H & S documentation. Experience of financial processes and basic knowledge of temporary traffic management arrangements, health and safety legislation, technical standards, best industry practice and good IT skills will be beneficial for the role.

You will have excellent communication and negotiation skills to work closely with a range of stakeholders that includes colleagues, service providers, districts and boroughs, landowners, utilities, Councillors, residents associations and residents on a day-to-day basis to effectively assist delivery of the programmes.

An important part of this role will be to support the team’s customer service function and is an ideal opportunity for a person with new ideas to develop and raise the team’s customer service profile. You will be flexible and enjoys the challenge of the many changing and competing priorities in an operational environment.

You will have the opportunity to participate in a training development plan to achieve civil or highway engineer qualifications and to develop their experience by acting as project manager on individual schemes.
