At the Canal & River Trust, we believe life is better by water. Set up in 2012 to care for historic waterways across England and Wales, we aim to bring wellbeing benefits to millions by transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people can spend time and feel better.

How will you help make this vision a reality? By working with our talented team of engineers and inspectors to deliver and develop our asset management strategies. In this key role, you’ll monitor, inspect and assess the performance of our assets – and be our go-to person for technical expertise in managing infrastructure risk.

About the role

There’s plenty of impact to be had here: you’ll be responsible for carrying out asset inspections, making sure everything’s reviewed, approved and recorded to the highest of standards. Based on the outcome of your inspections, you’ll create spot-on recommendations and proposals for what work needs to be done, and when. As part of this, you’ll consider all angles: risk, cost, time, resource, heritage, the environment, and safety. Of course, it’s not just about digging deep into the technical details. You’ll also engage with our customers and help promote what we do in a positive way, taking on board any comments or complaints. After all, our work touches millions of people across the UK.

About you

Because of the very nature of our world, we’re looking for someone with excellent knowledge of waterway infrastructure. What’s more, you’ll have a background in assessing infrastructure risk, and have a good understanding of historic infrastructure too. While your track record of inspecting engineering activities will speak for itself, it’ll be complemented by membership of a relevant professional body (such as TMICE). Not only that, you’ll have GCSE (or equivalent) English and Maths, and a professional qualification in a relevant technical discipline (i.e. NVQ Level 2 Construction Civil Engineering).  Finally, you’ll be a natural at communicating with customers and colleagues alike, able to translate technical data for a non-technical audience.

About us

We maintain and bring to life 2,000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation. Come and be part of it.

To apply

We aim to represent the diverse communities we are part of and welcome applicants from across all sectors of the community. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce brings with it a diversity of ideas, thinking and ways of working which enhances what we do. Many of our vacancies can be considered for people who wish to work flexibly, job share or part time.
