Your new role

Here at Highways England we manage one of the world’s most advanced road networks. We care about the journeys our customers make, we want them to get home safe and well, and we want to connect our country to benefit our economy, business and our customers. We exist to connect the country, because we believe a connected country is better for everyone.

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Engineer in our Geotechnical team. You will lead and coordinate the activities and resources involved in the identification and development of early solutions for the ongoing development and maintenance of the South West region highway earthwork asset.

You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position.

This role is based from our Bristol office, Brunel House, with regular travel across the South West region.

What you’ll be leading on

• Lead the development of feasibility studies for improvements and/or renewals, including the compiling and checking of relevant documents, evidence and options for value management, taking into account new techniques, technologies, buildability, and costs
• Identify supporting need, prepare task briefs and manage the delivery of survey works that contribute to the improvement and/or renewal of assets
• Develop technical information/data to be provided to the design services contractor for the ‘design’ of improvement and renewals work
• Development of forward works programme
• Provide technical support to Project Managers by providing equipment/materials approvals, vetting of contractors’ compliance, inspection support on site, and reviewing of Health and Safety Files
• Ensure the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning stage of schemes

To be successful

• Degree or Higher national diploma in relevant discipline, or equivalent experience in highways geotechnical engineering, with appropriate experience in development of renewals, replacement and innovative schemes
• Strong knowledge of asset management
• Extensive experience in the use of asset databases – preferably HAGDMS (Highways Agency Geotechnical Data Management System)
• Knowledge of Construction Design Management 2015 and associated duties
• Understanding of the cost benefit analysis of renewals schemes
• Strong Experience in Highways Geotechnical Standards (DMRB), particularly HD22/08 (now CD622) and HD41/15, and experience in design and development of geotechnical remediation.
