Do you have experience in using complex models to solve analytical problems?

Have you previously worked in transport modelling and would you welcome the challenge of leading a team to best inform investment decisions?

Could you apply your project management skills to identify modelling needs, shape a proportionate solution and drive it through to delivery?

If so, we’d love to hear from you!

The Department for Transport is recruiting for a new Head of the Local Transport Modelling team. We are looking for candidates with proven expertise in using multi-modal transport models to solve analytical problems and the ability to communicate analysis effectively to inform decision-making.

The post provides an excellent opportunity to work in a high-profile policy area with Ministerial exposure. It is a demanding post and involves close working with policy colleagues to progress and shape transport policy. The post is particularly suited to ambitious analysts with a strong motivation to succeed, and able to work across boundaries to deliver results.

Working as part of a wider team, you’ll get the opportunity to work on leading-edge, multi-criteria models and influence the day-to-day lives of UK citizens.

Some of the responsibilities include:

  • Scrutinising major transport schemes to ensure that individual schemes continue to offer value for money.
  • Working with external stakeholders to develop business cases and provide advice to decision makers on quality of submissions.
  • Working closely with policy colleagues and Sub-National Transport Bodies to promote the use of robust evidence in prioritising investment.
  • Supporting the Bus Economics branch of LRTA to the development of bus appraisal guidance.

The team

The Local and Regional Transport Analysis (LRTA) team is a fast-paced multi-disciplinary analytical team that works closely with policy teams and covers high political priority areas including:

  • Economic rebalancing, improving intra-regional connectivity and boosting economic growth in the left behind regions of the UK.
  • Tackling the housing crisis and supporting the ambition to build 3 million new homes over the decade through improved infrastructure.
  • Tackling congestion and driving economic growth through investment in the major road network.

Transport modellers in LRTA work in a project based environment, supporting policy teams, and delivering high impact advice to support decisions at the highest level. The post in this team offer the opportunity to use your analysis expertise to help design government policy. This is an exciting time to be joining the LRTA team, with local transport and rebalancing the economy a key priority under the new government.

About You

This exciting role requires an individual with experience of undertaking multi-modal strategic modelling and managing projects effectively. You will work with a wide range of stakeholders and offer clear technical advice on the best route forwards to deliver the most effective schemes.
