We have an exciting opportunity to join the Sustainable Design Team within Growth and Infrastructure as a Principal Engineer.

We are looking for someone who is excited by the Governments bold new “Gear Change” vision for walking and cycling and wants to make a difference for their community.

BCP council have just been awarded £79M for Transforming the way our residents and visitors travel and are expecting further funding for additional Emergency Active Travel Measures, as well as through the Local Transport Plan. This role will lead in delivering major elements of these capital programmes for the Council.

The Role

BCP Council has recently formed as one of the country’s newest and largest unitary authorities and you will have the opportunity to help shape the future of the Highways Engineering team within the authority. The successful post holder, reporting to the group manager, will lead a team of 4-6 Engineers/Technicians, as well as work with our partnering consultancy team, to design and implement highway improvement schemes across the conurbation.

As a Principal Engineer, you’ll see your schemes progress from early design to Construction. You’ll feel inspired to challenge yourself, as well as your colleagues.

In a typical week you will:

  • Drive effective health and safety practices within your Design Team
  • Manage a team working in an office environment and remotely, on a more flexible working pattern.
  • Comply with all the latest relevant technical standards
  • Work with Sustainable Design Manager to lead designs through to delivery
  • Communicate designs in collaboration with other disciplines, stakeholders and to a varied audience, including the public, councillors and Senior Officers.
  • Liaise with the Client and stakeholders to ensure solutions that are developed are suitable for buildability and maintainability
  • Manage/Monitor budgets and work with the Transport Improvement Manager to ensure schemes are being delivered to the programme and within budget
  • Develop, coach and provide guidance to less experienced staff
  • Check or approve designs, design reports and other technical documents
  • Prepare contract documents.
  • Manage contracts and costings through delivery, with both internal and external delivery teams.
  • Ensure innovation and best practice is highlighted and adopted where practicable

As a result of the creation of BCP Council in 2019, we are working on simplifying our terms and conditions of service and will be creating a single pay structure which all of our employees will move on to.  It is important to us that we offer benefits that our colleagues value as part of their total employment package and we are reviewing these to make sure we have it right.  We’re hoping to implement these changes in October 2021 and all colleagues joining us will be included in these changes.
