Groundforce is a market leading expert in excavation support and ancillary services. Specialising in temporary works projects, it is the strategic rental partner for many of the UK’s leading construction contractors delivering projects for Utilities’ frameworks and major projects such as HS2 and Luton Dart. It has won awards for product innovation and is a bastion of on-site safety.

Due to retirement, Groundforce wishes to appoint a Technical Director who will be the driving force behind the future direction and on-going advancement of its technical capabilities.

To provide some scale, the business operates out of seventeen depots throughout Great Britain and three in Germany. There are forty in the Technical team and the pipeline of work is growing. Groundforce operates with a high degree of autonomy but benefits from being part of the highly regarded FTSE listed equipment rental group, Vp plc, which employs approximately 3,000 people.

The Role

  • You will report to the UK Managing Director and will form part of the leadership team together with Operations and Sales. You will be responsible for leading the technical design team of forty people based across offices in Great Britain and Europe.
  • It is a given that you will have technical prowess in this arena, but where you will add real value is through your leadership qualities.  How you develop, motivate and lead your teams will be key. This is a role for someone who understands how to be a visible leader, with the necessary communication and business management skills.
  • You will inherit a strong technical team and be given the autonomy to advance the technical ability of the individuals and widen the offering of the organisation. In that regard, it is anticipated that automation and digitisation will play a key part in the future development, as will product innovation and development.
  • You will be an advocate of continuous improvement and hold a desire to deliver best-in-class performance.
  • Success in this role can be an enabler for progression within this company, as well as its parent, Vp plc.

The Candidate

You will be a proven engineering and technical leader with a track record of success within a related project-led civil engineering / construction product or service business. This could include plant hire, consulting engineering and construction contracting organisations.

A Chartered Civil Engineer, you will have led a medium to large design team and will ideally have experience in Temporary Works design, and in working with Eurocodes.

An individual with gravitas and strong communication skills, you must possess a combination of both technical and leadership capabilities.
