UCL’s Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that are designed to educate Engineers in a dynamic and exciting learning environment. CEGE has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas and has consistently been among the best funded such departments in the UK. The research carried out in the department reflects a broad multidisciplinary view of the engineering world. Based in the CEGE Here East laboratory, we are seeking a Research and Teaching Support Technician to provide day-to-day technical support to CEGE teaching, research and commercial testing activities.
The Research and Teaching Support Technician will support the work of academics, researchers, teaching and external partners, set up and operate a range of universal materials testing machines for teaching, research and commercial test purposes. The postholder will also operate the controls of a multi-actuator servo-hydraulic system and associated data acquisition system, and support the operation of the environmental chamber including mobilization, specimen setting and data acquisition.
The successful candidate will have an HNC or HND qualification in a relevant engineering discipline and/or completed apprenticeship at level 5 to 7, or equivalent experience in civil engineering and/or mechanics, and proven experience of providing efficient, professional, and effective practical technical support for the manufacture, assembly and testing of structural systems in an industrial or experimental environment. Familiarity with universal materials testing machines, servo-controlled actuators, lifting equipment, and proficient knowledge of instrumentation for structural and environmental sensing and monitoring, and associated data acquisition systems, are also essential. Experience of working in a similar facility in an HEI or industry, including evidence of successful collaborations with either academic staff, research assistants and students, or with private sector clients, and the ability to work with a variety of materials such as metals, timber, concrete, masonry and fibre reinforced polymers, would be an advantage.
