As the Lead Geotechnical Engineer at HS2, you’ll be the technical expert who supports the Head of Geotechnical Engineering in providing technical direction to all geotechnical engineering activities, including the drafting of Standards, technical assurance of design work and leading on geotechnical initiatives and activities which benefit the programme.

About the role:

Develop and maintain technical standards, guidance notes and specifications for the geotechnical discipline

Review and approve departures where 'owner' of technical standards and specifications

Provide technical advice in relation to geotechnical engineering and all related activities to all parts of the HS2 Ltd business.

Support Subject Matter Leads in development and delivery teams in providing assurance that the geotechnical engineering on the HS2 Railway is undertaken in accordance with technical requirements set by the Civil Engineering standards.

Provide technical leadership on geotechnical engineering activities across the whole HS2 project (i.e. within HS2 Ltd and the supply chain) to ensure an integrated, consistent approach to delivering the range of activities associated with the advisory and client role of the Technical Authority invested in the Infrastructure Directorate. Where necessary in conjunction with HS2 supporting financial and procurement teams, arrange for the input of specialist engineering consultants.

Promote the implementation of best practice and innovative engineering techniques, technologies and processes, driving consistency and identifying opportunities for efficiencies across Phase One and Phase Two delivery teams.

Represent HS2 at a national level as required.

Qualifications

 

About You:

Communicating technical and other information effectively with others at all levels including both internal and external and technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Able to provide specialist technical support and leadership on discipline-specific scientific, technical and engineering principles to project development / delivery teams but knowing when to seek further guidance from the Head of Geotechnical Engineering or others.

Civil engineering degree (or equivalent) coupled with Chartered Civil Engineer/Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience.

Understanding of general civil engineering design and construction processes with expert knowledge of geotechnical engineering.

Experience in managing geotechnical engineering on large complex major projects.

Experience of managing competing project and engineering demands, with cost and schedule implications.
