Flood & Coastal Risk Management

Shape tomorrow: lead a local team that’s part of a national mission

The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Our Asset Performance teams commission work to enhance, maintain and repair some 78,000 flood and coastal risk assets across England. By contributing to the management of these investments, you’ll be helping to protect people, property and the environment from the challenges of global climate change. Your skills have never mattered more.

The role

From earth embankments and floodwalls to pumping stations and flood storage reservoirs, you'll be responsible for the risk assets within your catchment. In this diverse role, you can expect to oversee construction, inspection, surveying, assessments, maintenance and decommissioning, ensuring assets are effectively managed throughout their whole lifecycle. At the same time, you’ll use your experience to manage the health, safety and wellbeing of yourself and others. A valued member of the Operations Leadership Team you will, in turn, provide strong and effective leadership to bring out the best in your team.

The person

This is primarily a people-management role: your skills will be in inspiring, motivating and developing a team, and supporting them through change. While some appreciation of civil engineering or asset management would be helpful, a technical background is not essential. You’ll have strong communication and engagement skills and the ability to manage multiple and completing demands. A driving licence is essential.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
