Flood & Coastal Risk Management

Change tomorrow: deliver local programmes that are part of a national mission
The challenge
We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.
The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.
Our Asset Performance teams commission work to enhance, maintain and repair some 78,000 flood and coastal risk assets across England. By contributing to the management of these investments, you’ll be helping to protect people, property and the environment from the challenges of global climate change. Your skills have never mattered more.
The role
Investment means change and, as a senior leader, you’ll steer your team through the challenges ahead. Acting as Local Delivery Lead, you’ll oversee a range of revenue and capital funded investment programmes. This means working with both in-house field teams and external contractors, and getting the best from engineering specialists, project managers and support services such as procurement. Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, you will collaborate with other Local Delivery Leads nationally to share best practice and learning.
The person
To succeed, you’ll need experience of managing people, finance and resources to deliver large and complex programmes of work, possibly in a technical or engineering context. Knowledge of capital and revenue funding streams would be helpful. We’ll look to you to make decisions at pace, optimising programmes of work and responding to changing circumstances. Commercial awareness and contract management skills are important. At the same time, your excellent communication and engagement skills will enable you to influence and motivate a wide range of people.
The benefits
Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.
There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.
The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
