Flood & Coastal Risk Management

Shape tomorrow: develop the people who deliver vital projects

The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Each of our 14 regions has its own Programmes team, which works in partnership with local authorities and other organisations to balance the risk of floods and coastal erosion with supporting economic growth, the wellbeing of our communities and the environment. By adding local insights to the development and planning of work, you’ll be helping to protect people, property and the environment from the challenges of global climate change. Your skills have never mattered more.

The role

A key figure in our local leadership group, you’ll nurture the high-performing project teams we need to meet the challenges of climate change. You’ll support staff in their project delivery roles, driving everything from performance management and coaching to recruitment and succession planning. A key task will be to create personal development opportunities and a good work-life balance through the assignment of work. You can expect to manage a team of 8-12 people made up of Environment Agency employees or staff from delivery partner organisations.

The person

A strong track-record in leadership is our key requirement. Inspiring and innovative, you’ll have proven yourself capable of fostering a great working environment and developing other people. If you have a professional background in an engineering, environmental or geography discipline, so much the better. Leading by example, you’ll be ready to build strong relationships inside and outside the organisation and work collaboratively to solve problems. The ability to manage resources and encourage knowledge sharing is essential, as are excellent communication and influencing skills.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
