Flood & Coastal Risk Management

Inform tomorrow: ensure we have the workforce we need to deliver our vital projects

The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Each of our 14 regions has its own Programmes team, which works in partnership with local authorities and other organisations to balance the risk of floods and coastal erosion with supporting economic growth, the wellbeing of our communities and the environment. By adding local insights to the development and planning of work, you’ll be helping to protect people, property and the environment from the challenges of global climate change. Your skills have never mattered more.

The role

You’ll ensure we have the people and skills we need to deliver vital flood defence programmes and projects – both now and in the future. You will gather and interrogate resource data, working alongside others in producing local resource models and resource scenario plans, particularly related to capability assessment and development activities. You can expect to manage training budgets, and to procure training solutions. You will also work with colleagues country-wide to provide a resourcing assurance service and analyse performance against programme targets.

The person

You need to be capable of working collaboratively with key stakeholders and making use of data to shape resources around business requirements. You’re therefore likely to have a background in programme management, workforce planning or capability assessments. An understanding of the Portfolio, Programme and Projects Offices (P3O) framework is important and you will be offered study for certification as part of your development. A PRINCE2 or APM Project Fundamentals qualification would also be useful. Highly numerate, you’ll need to be competent in using Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and will probably have experience of analysing, interpreting and presenting statistics and data. A keen eye for detail and good communication skills are essential.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
