Flood & Coastal Risk Management

Change tomorrow: deliver our flood risk management projects

The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Our Partnership and Strategic Overview (PSO) teams support the whole lifecycle of our flood and coastal risk management assets, working with communities, professional partners and other organisations to protect us all from flood risk. Whether you’re analysing data to inform plans or developing strategic approaches to protect people and property, your skills are vital for our future.

The role

This is a varied role that draws upon a diverse range of skills. As part of the PSO team, you’ll lead the delivery of our flood risk management projects by building effective relationships with community leaders, professional partners and internal specialists.

You’ll also play an integral role in investigating opportunities to deliver environmental improvements alongside our flood schemes; for example, by helping us to achieve our ambition to work with environmental groups.

Additionally, you'll lead our engagement with Risk Management Authorities as they deliver on national targets for reducing flood risk over the next six years.

The person

We’re looking for a strategic leader with programme and project management experience. To succeed, you’ll need to demonstrate your partnership working, stakeholder engagement, influencing and persuasion skills. You’ll also have a relevant degree and be chartered, or working towards it, with a professional body such as CIWEM.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
