As a vital part of NHSScotland, NHS National Services Scotland’s mission is to enable and support the delivery of better health and better care, working in partnership. We do this by providing a range of specialised support services that enable NHS Boards to focus their efforts on delivering health improvement and patient care.

As part of the development of NHSScotland Assure, a new subject leadership role has been developed which will be the Principal Structural Engineer within the existing Health Facilities Scotland Architecture and Design team. This is a highly professional, senior and autonomous team comprising Principal Architects and National Fire Safety Advisors, and will be complemented by this new role of Principal Structural Engineer as we develop our new range of services and enhance existing services as part of the development of NHSScotland Assure. This Structural Engineering leadership role will also be responsible for management of external consultants and research partners as required.

NHSScotland Assure is the new centre of expertise focusing on quality in the built environment through providing a suite of services launching on 1 June 2021, also encompassing the existing services provided by Health Facilities Scotland and ARHAI (Antimicrobial Resistance Healthcare Associated Infection). Health Facilities Scotland is part of NHS National Services Scotland and provides operational guidance to NHSScotland healthcare bodies on all facilities topics. We deliver and co-ordinate effective advice and support in relation to national facilities, equipping and technical matters which support and improve health and well-being services.

We are looking for an experienced and qualified professional who will be responsible for developing and implementing a Structural Engineering assurance service for NHSScotland aligned with the assurance services being put in place for Mechanical & Electrical Engineering and Public Health/Water and Drainage Services, Fire Safety and Architecture/Design. The development of a Structural Engineering assurance service is a key priority for the role and a well-developed management skillset is required, as well as the ability to deal with stakeholders, including when prioritising workload. You will also be responsible for providing expert professional advice and leadership to NHSScotland, and represent NHScotland in dealings with other organisations through identifying key initiatives by researching best practice and innovative thinking in the field of structural engineering within healthcare design.

A good understanding and experience of healthcare design and technical issues is a key requirement for the role. You should have an understanding of the role and work of HFS and Property and Capital Planning, as well as an awareness of the issues involved in providing assurance and compliance on healthcare projects, a key priority for NHSScotland Assure.

You will be a qualified Chartered Structural Engineer (registered with The Institution of Structural Engineers), and will have extensive management and leadership experience, as well as a good understanding of the key issues and priorities in Healthcare design, construction and maintenance.

You will be expected to work with other professional leads within Property and Capital Planning, including the Assistant Director, Head of Architecture and Design, Principal Architects, National Fire Safety Advisors, Capital Projects Manager, Head of PPP, Senior Digital Estate and Asset Management Advisor, and Head of Operations (Equipping). You will also work with colleagues from other areas of NHSScotland Assure/HFS including Infection Control, FM, and Engineering.

Our benefits package includes a pension scheme, comprehensive range of work life balance policies, occupational health services, learning resource centres, discounted leisure, and financial and shopping benefits.

If you wish to enquire about this post, please contact Stuart Brown, Assistant Director (Property and Capital Planning) at stuart.brown3@nhs.scot to arrange a discussion.
