This is a technical role in the Water Resources Team responsible for maintaining and providing assurance that Anglian Water is fully compliant with the Reservoir Act 1975. The role holder will be provided with technical training and relevant experience to become appointed onto the Supervising Engineers Panel, a requirement under The Act. This is a key commitment of the role holder. 

Key accountabilities include: 

  • Actively participating and supporting with the submission of compliance reports to the Environment Agency for each designated reservoir on an annual basis. 
  • Being responsible for the supervision of AWS reservoirs which have been declassified as “high risk” under the Act and other non-registered reservoirs deemed a risk. 
  • Monitoring changes in reservoir legislation, enforcement and good practice and proposing measures to ensure continuous compliance with The Act. 
  • Ensuring that AWS policy procedures in relation to The Act are kept up to date and appropriate. 
  • Supporting the Reservoir Safety Manager with internal and external communication on all matters relating to the Reservoir Act 1975 (e.g. Environment Agency, DEFRA, British Dam Society, Water Supply/Water Recycling, AWS Insurance). 
  • Supporting the Reservoir Safety Manager with responding to reservoir safety emergency incidents.  
  • Collaborating with business stakeholders to secure and drive investment in reservoir safety activities, to maintain full compliance with The Act (in particular matters in the interest of safety and/or maintenance). 
  • Ensuring that all activities relating to the reservoir inspections comply in full with Health & Safety regulations. 
  • Attending and presenting at conferences and evening meetings as part of continuing development. 
  • Attending training courses for Supervising Engineers 

The Reservoir Safety Engineer will support the Reservoir Safety Manager in providing technical leadership and expertise both internally and externally on any issue relating to the Act. The Reservoir Safety Engineer will also provide reservoir engineering support to reservoirs which fall outside of the Act if required.

What does it take to be a Reservoir Safety Engineer? 

The Reservoir Safety Engineer requires strong technical knowledge and leadership qualities, including; 

  • Preparing high quality technical written reports 
  • Effectively managing key stakeholders (internally and externally) 
  • Preparing and delivering presentations to internal and external stakeholders 
  • The ability to balance conflicting issues. 
  • Knowledge and experience of design, construction, maintenance and operating techniques for regulated reservoir structures, hydraulics and geotechnical engineering (training will be provided as appropriate). 
  • A level of fitness suitable for inspections and confined spaces entry 

Qualifications and Experience 

  • Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer status (Essential). 
  • Practicing engineer 
  • Working knowledge of water and wastewater operations  
  • Understanding of regulated reservoir structures (preferably operated by AWS) – preferable 
  • Understanding of business issues affecting reservoir structures – preferable 
  • Knowledge/experience of confined spaces/working at height 

Please note - appointment by DEFRA to the Reservoir Supervising Engineers Panel is required for a fully appointed Supervising Engineer but full training and experience will be provided to the role holder to meet this requirement of The Act.
