UCL’s Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. CEGE has developed a state-of-the-art structural engineering laboratory for testing structures under different combinations of short-term and long-term mechanical (including fatigue) and environmental loads, across a spectrum of scales ranging from coupons to entire structures, sited at UCL @Here East. Efficient and effective operation of this space will be crucial to the success of the Structural-Environmental Laboratory. Therefore we are seeking to appoint a Senior Research Teaching Support Technician to oversee, support and contribute to the development of the facility.

The Senior Research and Teaching Support Technician will manage and deliver technical support to CEGE teaching, research and commercial testing activities supporting the laboratory activities in accordance to the requirements set by the Technical Resources Manager (TRM) and in direct co-ordination with key academics using the facility. The post holder will ensure effective and efficient delivery of practical technical support, good working practices and compliance with health and safety policy and local rules, including safe disposal of waste materials, and manage and develop an infrastructure and equipment strategy for HE Structural-Environmental laboratory in co-ordination with the TRM and with key academics using the facility for research and teaching.

The successful candidate will have completed an apprenticeship at level 7 or have an MSc qualification in a relevant engineering discipline or have equivalent experience and/or higher degrees in civil or mechanics engineering, and experience of providing efficient, professional, and effective practical technical support for the manufacture, assembly and testing of structural systems in an industrial or experimental environment. Familiarity with universal materials testing machines, servo-controlled actuators, lifting equipment, environmental chambers, and proficient knowledge of instrumentation for structural and environmental sensing and monitoring, and associated data acquisition systems, are also essential. Experience of working in a similar facility in an HEI or industry including evidence of successful delivery of technical support to staff, researchers, students, or clients, and experience of using engineering workshop machinery and equipment, such as milling machines, lathes, band saws, drilling machines, sheet metal fabrication, welding, and hand tools, would be an advantage.
