Roughan & O’Donovan (ROD) is looking to recruit a senior geotechnical engineer with 7 or more years’ relevant experience for a permanent position within its award-winning geotechnical team. ROD has offices in Sandyford, Dublin 18, Northwood, Dublin 9 and Otley, Leeds, UK.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior geotechnical engineer with 7 or more years’ relevant experience to join our dedicated and talented geotechnical group in delivering complex geotechnical design solutions as part of our overall multidisciplinary team.

ROD has a proven track record, experience and expertise across a range of technical disciplines, including transportation, bridges, buildings, retaining structures, slope stability, hydrology, hydrogeology and planning. 

In addition to devising and overseeing ground investigation contracts and earthworks/foundations designs, you will also be responsible for supporting our design teams through the provision of specialist geotechnical inputs.

Current and recent projects include:

Duties

  • Planning, procuring and controlling site investigation contracts for major infrastructure and commercial development projects to manage geotechnical risks 
  • Advising the structures teams on the design parameters for shallow and deep foundations for buildings, bridges, etc.
  • Designing complex foundations to Eurocode EC7, including pile groups and soil-structure interaction problems
  • Preparing the earthworks to Eurocode EC7 by producing contract documents, including specifications,design drawings and reports
  • Assessing borrow and quarry materials for reuse as embankment fill, drainage, concrete and pavementaggregates
  • Pavement foundation design in accordance with TII / UK DMRB
  • Assessing and designing soil improvement techniques for soft ground, including surcharge, vertical drains, vibroflotation, geosynthetic reinforcement, geosynthetic encased columns, piled embankments, mass stabilisation, rolling dynamic compaction, lime/concrete subgrade stabilisation
  • Assessing peat stability and access road, drainage and services for upland developments, such as windfarms etc.

Requirements

  • BSc in civil engineering / engineering geology
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in Irish/UK glacial till soils, including major road/rail projects
  • Knowledge of construction techniques for piles and retaining walls
  • Knowledge of soft ground techniques, peat stability and soil reinforcement methods of particular interest
  • Proficient knowledge and work experience using finite element modelling of soil-structure interaction problems (Plaxis)
  • Knowledge of quarry/borrow materials used as aggregates and pavement design
  • Construction experience in earthworks, soil improvement and deep foundations
  • Fluent/highly proficient in spoken and written English

Desirable

  • Post graduate qualification in geotechnical engineering or related field, MSc or PhD for example
  • Chartered Engineer status
  • Membership of a recognised professional body in the geotechnical field in UK/Ireland
  • Full driving licence
  • Knowledge of quarry/borrow materials used as aggregates and pavement design
  • Construction experience in earthworks, soil improvement and deep foundations
  • Knowledge of ground remediation/potentially contaminated materials
