Making best use of our assets to address the climate emergency

About the Environment Agency

If you’re part of the Environment Agency (EA), you’re part of the solution. Working with us means protecting and improving the environment for generations to come, tackling issues of national importance across a huge variety of disciplines. Our responsibilities span major industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries and conservation. Such a broad scope of work calls for diverse, multi-skilled teams and exceptional leadership: together, we’ll promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.

Your role with us

We’re looking for a transformational leader for our Flood & Coastal Risk Management (FCRM)

directorate.  As Deputy Director - Engineering & Technical Assurance, you will drive change in the way we design, maintain and operate infrastructure and engineering assets. Supporting the Chief Engineer in leading our Technical Authority service, you will ensure we make safe, reliable and sustainable decisions. Leading a team of engineering, asset data and assurance professionals, you will help to maintain engineering standards and technical resilience within a coherent national delivery framework. This will include collaborating with our supply chain partners and other national and international infrastructure and standards organisations.

Who we’re looking for

A qualified Chartered Civil, Mechanical or Electrical [HI1]  Engineer, you’ll have a background in leadership in a major complex infrastructure organisation or safety-critical engineering programme, including substantial experience as a senior accountable engineer. A grounding in national scale [HI2]  infrastructure management would be a particular advantage. You’ll be an inclusive, enabling leader with a track-record of delivering results through developing a diverse workforce and collaborating with senior leaders.

Your benefits with us

You will benefit from a culture that embraces difference and includes everyone, where you will feel supported and trusted to do the right thing. We will invest in you and allow you to grow and shape your career. What’s more, you’ll be able to have access to our great benefits package, including generous annual leave, an excellent pension, flexible working arrangements and the opportunity to be part of a variety of staff networks.

We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. To achieve this, we welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of race, sexual orientation and religion. We also welcome applications for flexible working patterns.
