Job Details

Forestry England is an organisation like no other. Our strong values and shared ambition to connect everyone with the nation’s forests underpin all that we do.

We are uniquely placed to confront the climate emergency, tackle the nature crisis and support the nation’s health and wellbeing. Working for Forestry England is to be part of the solution to the challenges of our generation.

Civil engineering underpins the delivery of Forestry England’s operational activities. The infrastructure we build and maintain supports all that Forestry England delivers. From the supply of sustainably sourced timber, through to being the largest outdoor recreation provider in the country, civil engineering is vital to our success.

This post is an extremely varied and exciting opportunity to join the Forestry England Civil Engineering team. You will play a key role, advising on the management of Forestry England’s reservoirs and providing specialist water related technical advice.

Being part of Forestry England is to be part of a progressive and inclusive organisation, where you will work in and among some of the most diverse and spectacular natural environments in England. Our benefits include a generous holiday entitlement, substantial training, development and volunteering opportunities, flexible and blended working arrangements and membership of an excellent civil service pension scheme.

This important role is part of Forestry England’s national engineering team. As part of this team, you will provide leadership, support, advice and guidance to our operational teams, who undertake the day to day management and maintenance of our water related assets.

The primary focus of the role is to drive forwards Forestry England’s ambitious reservoir management strategy. This requires excellent communication skills and entails cross-functional change management in a matrix management organization. The ability to build relationships, establish shared goals, influence, and lead significant change is essential.

The role will also provide water related advice and guidance in relation to the design and development of projects such as surface water drainage systems, implementation of SuDS and natural flood management.

The role will be based in one of Forestry England’s offices across England with flexibility for some optional blended working (see details below). Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.

The nature of the role requires a willingness to travel regularly throughout England with short stays away from home as required.

Company

We are England’s largest land manager and custodian of the nation’s public forests. We have around 1,000 committed staff and volunteers looking after more land and more trees than any other organisation. We work in partnership with others across government and the charitable and private sectors.

The nation’s forests are a great source of natural wealth and help shape the look and feel of the ‘natural’ countryside. They influence how the countryside works, for timber as well as people and wildlife.

Forests flourish with management and planning. In that sense we are landscapers on a vast, nationwide scale for this generation and beyond. Our work today influences what the nation’s forests look like for generations to come.

We are looking a hundred years or more ahead to imagine how England’s countryside needs to adapt to a changing climate and cultural changes.

It is a job that never stops growing.
