Job description

At the Environment Agency, we do more than build flood risk management schemes or regulating. You’ll lead project teams to deliver our organisation’s strategic ambitions; having the ability to build great working environments and develop high performing teams, including collaborative working with supply partners spread across different locations and building a strong network of relationships inside and outside the organisation.

You’ll play a key role in technical leadership within our local leadership group. You’ll use strong interpersonal skills to build and develop resilient networks of working relationships both inside and outside the organisation with Stakeholders and Partners. You’ll use influencing skills with stakeholders such as statutory authorities, local councils, landowners, and local communities to negotiate agreements, gain approvals and secure external funding.

You’ll apply strong commercial acumen in project, contract, and risk management to establish effective supply-partner relationships, facilitating collaborative and efficient ways of working, following governance, escalation procedures and decision-making. As a Senior project leader, you will need to be able to perform the role of Project Executive. We’ll expect you to enhance the project delivery process from initial strategic planning, through feasibility, detailed design and into implementation, construction, and handover.

You will assist your Team Manager with workload planning, recruitment, training, and support your team to develop their technical project management role.

The team

We are Programme and Contracts Management (PCM), part of Major Projects and Programme Delivery (MPPD), creating a better place through excellence in project and programme management.

You’ll become part of an award-winning team that provides areas, alongside national services, and centres, with an effective project/ programme management service. Our strong, well-qualified teams manage projects throughout their life-cycle to deliver environmental improvements, adding value and resulting in a greater sense of shared ownership with local communities.

Experience/skills required

Likely qualified to degree level or equivalent in engineering, environmental or geography related discipline ideally with chartered membership of relevant professional body e.g. ICE, CIWEM or APMP, but not essential if you have at least 5 years’ experience and proven track record of great leadership in a project delivery or programme environment.

A passionate leader, with ability to build a great working environment and bring out the best in collaborative and high performing teams across different locations. You’ll be skilled in developing people, managing performance, delivering through others, building inclusive relationships, and embedding excellence and knowledge sharing.

Holding a Portfolio, Programme, Project or Contract Management qualification or chartered membership status would be an advantage but is not essential and will form part of your development plan. However, it’s the way you inspire people and innovate that will set you apart – along with big-picture thinking that can improve our operations.

Contact and additional information

You may be required to co-locate and work at other Environment Agency and delivery partner offices across the South East Delivery Hub. You may also be required to attend national meetings in locations such as London and Birmingham, with some overnight stays.
