A research institute of the Natural Environment Research Council that delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. They are committed to achieving the Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2040. The commitment comprises Scope 1, Scope 2 and high impact Scope 3 emissions across all owned activities. The Net Zero delivery plan comprises exciting renewable energy projects in Antarctica and Cambridge. As part of this effort, the institute is expanding its Net Zero team within the innovation and Impact Directorate to drive and support the Net Zero delivery plan.

Your new role
The research institute are now looking for a Sustainability Manager to help deliver their Net Zero objectives on Travel and Supply Chain emissions and contribute to wider efforts of the Net Zero team.

Key information:

  • Salary: £50,000 per annum
  • Length of term: Fixed 2-year contract
  • Location: Cambridge
  • Working patterns: Full time, hybrid


Duties & responsibilities:

  • Drive the implementation of the NERC/UKRI Travel policy and help the institute achieve 25% carbon reduction from business travel short to medium term as per NERC aspiration.
  • Work with different teams across the institute and setting up Travel carbon budgets and management mechanisms.
  • Establish data collection methods and report against targets from each team.
  • Carbon assessment of the institute wide Travel emissions.
  • Carbon assessment of the institute polar supply chain including the delivery of carbon audits of BAS contracts.
  • Establish a Scope 3 emissions baseline and propose reduction targets
  • Contribute to the annual carbon reporting with carbon associated with purchased goods, services and travel emissions.
  • Identify ways of increasing efficiency and reducing the carbon impact of the polar supply chain.
  • Strengthen the sustainable procurement practice and develop an implementation plan.


What you'll need to succeed

  • Carbon/Sustainability/Engineering or other science related degree, or an equivalent level of knowledge and analytical skills gained through work experience at a similar level.
  • Professional registration with a relevant professional body e.g. Energy Institute or IEMA.
  • A demonstrable track record of carbon accounting, emissions assessment (particularly experience in Scope 3) and delivering carbon reduction solutions.
  • Very good understanding of sustainability and procurement/supply chain processes and principles.
  • Strong data management skills (extracting and collating data, development of system).
  • Experience of producing and delivering technical reports to senior stakeholder groups.
  • Data-literate individual - comfortable working with complex & incomplete data sets to produce meaningful insights.
