A research institute of the Natural Environment Research Council that delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. They are committed to achieving the Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2040. The commitment comprises Scope 1, Scope 2 and high impact Scope 3 emissions across all owned activities. The Net Zero delivery plan comprises exciting renewable energy projects in Antarctica and Cambridge. As part of this effort, the institute is expanding its Net Zero team within the innovation and Impact Directorate to drive and support the Net Zero delivery plan.

Your new role
The research institute are now looking for a Carbon Manager to focus on the development of methodology for project-based carbon accounting. There is a significant piece or work already delivered on the development of financial cost units/metrics of each of the institute's activities. The deliverables of the successful applicant are expected to help the institute take more informed decisions considering both carbon and financial implications.

Key information:

  • Salary: £50,000 per annum
  • Length of term: Fixed 2-year contract
  • Location: Cambridge
  • Working patterns: Full time, hybrid


Duties & responsibilities:

  • Develop a project-based carbon accounting methodology and process.
  • Map and define the different activities across the institute operations and logistics that have an impact on carbon and set accounting boundaries.
  • Collate and analyse fuel, energy and carbon data related to these activities.
  • Ensure alignment of the carbon accounting process with the cost accounting process where possible.
  • Develop project-based carbon accounting metrics for each of the activities.
  • Improve and automate data collection methods.
  • Ensure quality and accuracy of data.
  • Ensure the effective redevelopment of Operation Planning Tools and Systems to facilitate the assessment of carbon emissions and collection of data.
  • Embed carbon metrics to the Operations and Logistics planning tools to improve wider understanding of the carbon impact of different activities and highlight carbon intensive areas.


What you'll need to succeed

  • Energy/Sustainability/Engineering or other science related degree, or an equivalent level of knowledge and analytical skills gained through work experience at a similar level.
  • A demonstrable track record of carbon accounting, emissions assessment (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) and delivering carbon reduction solutions.
  • Experience of producing and delivering technical reports to senior stakeholder groups.
  • Strong data validation and analysis skills.
  • Experience of change management and delivering high-impact process improvement.
  • Experience in delivering projects within an organisation with complex operations and logistics.
  • Demonstrate independence and initiative in carrying out role. Organise and prioritise workload to meet deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with a range of stakeholders and present complex analysis/information clearly and concisely to non-experts. Experience in producing quality reports.
  • Strong numerical skills to carry out accurate and in-depth data analysis and validation, use data to produce reports and produce presentation material.
