Summary

The Science Capability in Animal Health (SCAH) programme is an ambitious, 10–15-year programme working towards safeguarding and future-proofing the UK’s animal health science capability.

The programme has recently secured significant funding towards transforming the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s (APHA) Weybridge scientific campus.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a priority Defra programme on the Government’s Major Projects Portfolio, of significant national importance.

Background

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and also works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Governments.

APHA is responsible for animal and plant health science and provides the UK’s primary capability for managing the continuously evolving threats posed by the spread of high-risk diseases carried by animals.

It plays a key role in minimising the impact of disease outbreaks (most recently, avian flu) on the UK farming and food industries, as well as making a significant contribution to animal health research, developing diagnostics, treatments and conducting disease surveillance. APHA’s work is also of international importance, acting as a reference laboratory for 22 different animal diseases, including bovine TB, salmonella and avian influenza.

APHA’s Weybridge campus is part of Defra group’s science estate, with specialist scientific facilities which play a vital part of the national scientific infrastructure. It is one of just 30 such sites across the world.

This investment marks the start of a long-term programme of work that will transform the estate and the science it delivers, with the provision of up-to-date, modern facilities that are necessary to meet the UK’s ambitions as a scientific superpower and maintain APHA’s world-leading expertise.
