Hays are working in partnership with a recognised Public Body Client to recruit for a Project Engineer- Structures. The Project Engineer (Structures) will implement the Structures department procedures to maintain a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to design, construction and other technical activities on assigned projects. With over 4000 employees across various locations throughout the province, this company is one of Northern Ireland's largest employers who has 50+ years' experience in providing quality public sector services throughout Northern Ireland. Due to a consistent pipeline of work leading into 2023/24, this organisation now seeks a Project Manager to join their growing structures team.

Your new role

The Project Manager (Structures) will be responsible for managing a wide range of revenue and capital funded civil engineering projects from Inception to Closure. Project types include a range of structures (bridges, culverts, retaining walls earthworks and sea defences) including environmental considerations on the railway network and include complex, multidisciplinary projects as well as minor works. Tasks of this role include:

  • Act as the delegated point of contact within Structures for technical issues on assigned projects and assist in the management of design development and progression of design.
  • Assist in the review/approval of project designs and specifications to ensure projects are delivered in compliance with current Railway Group, NIR and Network Rail Company standards, formal specifications and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants and contractors, and challenge where necessary, to ensure assigned projects are delivered to current industry quality, environmental and safety standards to meet the Structures department end user requirements.
  • Represent Structures at project meetings from project inception through to handover.
  • Assist the Senior Project Engineer in the review/approval of project documentation e.g. mandates, briefs, business cases etc on behalf of the Structures Department to ensure that no project scope creep occurs and that the benefits envisaged are delivered.
  • Providing advice on construction issues to the project teams including input into buildability assessments, method statements etc.

What you need to succeed

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in civil engineering projects, preferably design based.
  • Sound knowledge and experience of project management methodologies and documentation
  • Experience in working with a multi-disciplinary design team.
  • Engineering related bachelor's degree e.g. Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering
