Job Details

A highway engineer with a consulting engineering, or public sector background is required by a leading, international forensic investigations consultancy. This is a senior level appointment for a chartered engineer, and an opportunity to deploy existing skills in one of the more intriguing and rewarding branches of the civil engineering sector.

Our clients’ experts are drawn from the civil, structural, geotechnical, materials science, toxicology, automotive, fire, manufacturing, environmental and energy sectors. You would be joining a team of chartered civil and structural engineers and providing specialist highways expertise, a discipline area that is in much demand. They have a strong capability within the built environment and an international caseload that covers buildings, bridges, rail, highways, development infrastructure, industrial facilities, ports & harbours, renewables and much more.

The Company: A global leader in forensic investigations for the built environment. They are typically engaged by legal firms, insurers, loss adjusters, local authorities, government agencies and client organisations. They will discover the root cause of a failure or defect, their findings are regularly used to settle litigation cases. The company is admired as an employer, terms and conditions of employment are generous and investment in staff is high. They work in a high margin sector with constant demand throughout economic cycles.

Your Profile: A chartered civil (MICE) or chartered highways and transportation engineer (MIHT),or equivalent. A strong academic background with a 2:1 engineering degree or above. A background that provides a strong technical understanding of highways. This could have been gained with a consulting engineering practice, County Council or Highways England. Experience of site survey / inspection work is advantageous. Problem solving and lateral thinking skills are essential, as is the ability to convey your findings in well written reports.

Your Role: Your work will be as broad as it is intriguing. You will be investigating the cause and origin of highway related defects and failures, your findings will be used to resolve legal disputes and claims, the lessons learned will contribute to the evolution and improvement of the highways industry. During initial site investigations, you will typically oversee field testing, gather photographic evidence and interview witnesses. This information will enable you to unravel the cause of the failure, consulting specialist experts as required. You will then prepare a report that provides a clear  explanation of your findings. This needs to be expressed in a way that can be understood by those from a non-technical background, whilst being robust enough to pass scrutiny during claims settlement and litigation.

Training & Progression: Guidance and training will be provided, enabling  you to apply your existing wealth of expertise and to present your findings. You will also be offered the opportunity and training to become an expert witness. This expanding part of their business provides plenty of opportunity for those who want to progress. There may be the occasional requirement to make short overseas visits.
