Your extensive structural engineering experience that includes working with Grade 1; 2* and 2 listed buildings, has given you a good understanding of the philosophy and methods of the conservation of historic structures and sites. As a result, you’re ready to be part of not only one of the most technically challenging programmes you’ll ever work on, but also the largest building restoration project ever undertaken in the UK.

A truly unique building, the Palace of Westminster - a world famous icon of democracy - needs essential restoration and renewal to preserve it for future generations. Covering 34 acres, and the size of more than 1,000 houses, there are 1,100 rooms, 100 staircases, three miles of passageways, four floors and 65 different levels. We’re currently carrying out thousands of hours of complex building surveys and investigations in order to inform future decision making on the work that’s needed. We’ve already engaged teams of architects, engineers, project managers and contractors who will shape the future direction of the work. We’re now looking for a suitably qualified and experienced Senior Structural Engineer to be part of our structure for success.

Reporting directly to the Head of Architecture and working closely with our Technical Assurance teams, among your many challenges will be the need to assess potentially significant interventions to the Grade 1 listed Palace of Westminster. You’ll also regularly liaise with the wider team to ensure the effective briefing and management of consultants to drive value for money, consistent quality and timely delivery of the various workstreams. Some of your work will also overlap with colleagues to ensure that a clear strategy is in place and understood for each engineering design element and its interface with the historic Grade 1 listed building. It’s difficult to sum up the role effectively within the confines of a job advert, but it’s perhaps best described as being like performing open heart surgery on the Palace of Westminster.

To succeed, you’ll need an academic qualification, with an accredited degree (BEng or MEng) in Civil/Structural Engineering. You’ll also need to have achieved Chartered status through either the IStructE or ICE. In addition, your broad experience has given you an extensive knowledge of the use, behaviour and, most importantly, the degradation of the materials used in historic buildings. Accordingly, you’ll be able to bring a superior insight into the problems which may develop in old buildings and have what it takes to assess design solutions which cause the minimum of disruption to the building fabric.

The ability to promote best practice set out in BS7913 in Building Conservation is also required, as is competency in the application of conservation within the construction process. We’ll also be looking for broad knowledge of legislation relating to the latest building regulations, including health and safety standards, and best practice in delivery of restoration and renewal works within historic buildings. An understanding of the environment and dynamics in which Parliament operates, including its interaction with Government, would be useful too, as would inclusion on the Conservation Accreditation Register for Engineers, although this is not essential.

Salary circa £75,000
